Uvita

Uvita is a magical destination where the jungle meets the Pacific, a breathtaking landscape boasting endless natural wonders on display for those willing to venture to its shores.

This gateway to Costa Rica’s southern zone offers an escape from the crowds of Costa Rica’s more popular tourist destinations and an invitation to immerse in its lush interior, explore unspoiled beaches, and sample authentic culture. Home to countless species of tropical birds like toucans, scarlet macaws, and hummingbirds along with monkeys, sloths, and coati, Uvita may find itself on the fringes of the famed Osa Peninsula but remains a true paradise in its own right.

Golfito

At first glance one might not be unimpressed with this southernmost port of Costa Rica.

However those willing to venture out a bit will soon come to discover the gems hidden beyond this small town. Golfito is situated perfectly on the shores of Golfo Dulce, or ‘Sweet Gulf’, whose warm tranquil waters rank as some of the richest on the planet for marine biodiversity. Various eco lodges accessible only by boat offer a truly immersive experience along the shores of this special place.

Venturing further south towards the border with Panama, a journey to the end of road reveals some of Costa Rica’s most remote, untouched stretches of coastline backed by abundant growth and super-rich evergreen foliage. Surfers will know this road well as it leads to Pavones and one of the longest left-hand waves in the world as well as plenty more uncrowded waves along the way and beyond.

Osa Peninsula

Osa is the ultimate escape offering its dense tropical rainforest and wild beaches to nature lovers, adventure seekers, and anyone with a desire to truly get away from it all.

While a natural paradise, it remains one of the most fragile ecosystems in the world, in need of the utmost care, protection, and respect from visitors and residents alike. A place where jaguars roam the rainforest, macaws gather in groups of twenty or more and humpback whales feed off the coast on their migration north and south, Osa is your Eden.

Savegre

Often overlooked as a desired destination, Savegre is actually home to some of the most abundant offerings of adventure and nature in the country.

The beaches of Dominical are a playground for surfers, while the cloud forests of San Gerardo are an absolute delight for birders. Those seeking thrills will relish in the rivers on rafting expeditions while the bravest climb the famed Chirripo, Costa Rica’s highest mountain where these same rivers are birthed.

Some of the experiences you can enjoy while here

Bahia Ballena

A true marvel if not miracle of nature, the crescent shaped beach of Uvita cradles this warm water bay featuring the awe-inspiring ‘whale’s tail’, a stunning representation of the gentle giants’ anatomy remarkably etched into the pristine coastline. If this wasn’t enough, the tail is part of the Ballena National Marine Park which plays host to migrating humpback whales year-round!

Cano Island

Caño Island is an amazing marine biological reserve located approximately 50 km from the shore with virgin blue waters making it the perfect tropical paradise for snorkelers and divers. Fantastic underwater visibility affords the opportunity to observe and swim alongside sea turtles, stingrays, manta rays, moray eels, barracudas, tuna, snapper, parrot fish, puffers, and more. Marine life is also abundant in the general outliers of the island and you can see white tipped reef sharks, and occasionally whale sharks and humpback whales.

Cloud forest

The cloud forest of San Gerardo de Dota often plays second fiddle to the world famous Monteverde, however the most avid of bird watchers will tell you that this is the place to see some of Costa Rica’s finest feathered friends, including the Resplendent Quetzal! The region is less visited and less crowded than its northern neighbour making it ideal for the peace and quiet valued by birds and watchers alike.

Corcovado National Park

Home to over 5000 species of plants, more than 300 species of birds, and over 100 species of mammals including deer, peccary, coatis, armadillos, anteaters, and sloths the famed Corcovado National Park is an absolute dream for nature lovers. Here you can encounter all four species of Costa Rican monkeys including howler, white face capuchin, spider and the endangered squirrel monkey, rarely seen together outside of Osa. Those who are patient, reverent, and a little lucky may encounter the elusive Baird's tapir or one of Corcovado's resident big cats: jaguarundi, margay, ocelot, puma or even a jaguar!

Golfo Dulce

The Golfo Dulce is one of only four tropical fjord-like estuaries in the whole world. These waters have been identified by National Geographic as one of the ocean’s 20 wildest places and recognized by Mission Blue as an exceptional ecosystem for marine biodiversity. Take a boat trip, paddle board, kayak, and snorkel in these amazing warm waters where dolphins and whales swim wild and free by day and at night algae glow creating one of the most incredible bioluminescence spectacles Earth can offer.

Surf the south

Once again, the north Pacific coast of the country gets all the glory, while the southern shores await the avid explorer in search of uncrowded waves breaking along wild palm-fringed beaches. The towns of Dominical, Uvita, Matapalo all the way down to Pavones offer something for everyone whether you’re taking your first lesson or in search of the wave of a lifetime!

White Water Rafting

A journey of unsurpassed beauty, jungle vegetation, and exploding whitewater, rafting on the Savegre is perfect for the adventuresome beginner and experienced rafter with Class II and III adrenaline-filled rapids. The Savegre River is a magnificent stretch of whitewater that begins its course by winding out of a sparsely inhabited valley in the mountains. Named one of the most pristine rivers in Central America, the Savegre is full of incredible scenery at every turn.
