Life Monteverde

Conventional models of tourism have traditionally displaced farming culture throughout Costa Rica and Central America.

Agrotourism is one form of rural community-based tourism that has been effective in reversing this trend as it effectively meshes both economies in such a way that offers current and future generations of farmers a viable option for maintaining their way of life within a shifting economic landscape. Life Monteverde, started by three farming families in 1990 which would later grow to a union of 12, is a pioneer and leader in this model of agrotourism.

Life Monteverde is dedicated to sustainable coffee production, not only in agricultural practice, but also through education of local and international students. Members of the co-op possess variety of skills including forestry, environmental education, administration and finances, coffee trade, agriculture, human resources and arts. As a result of their efforts and desire to share their wealth of knowledge and skillsets the larger community has benefited with the hiring of permanent staff, seasonal workers, collaboration with neighboring farms, and families hosting study abroad students through homestays.
