Osa, Costa Rica
Having been asked: If you could only go to Costa Rica once in a lifetime, and visit a single destination, where would you go? The answer is simple. Osa Penninsula is the ultimate escape offering its unspoiled landscape and pristine beaches to nature lovers, adventure seekers, and anyone with a desire to truly get away from it all. Once described by National Geographic as one of the most biologically intense places on the planet, Osa harbors thirteen unique ecosystems, half of the species in Costa Rica, and 2.5% of the planet's biodiversity!
While a natural paradise, it remains one of the most fragile ecosystems in the world, in need of the utmost care, protection, and respect from visitors and residents alike. A place where jaguars roam the rainforest, macaws gather in groups of twenty or more and humpback whales feed off the coast on their migration north and south, Osa is our Eden. Read on and join us for this incredible journey into the wild of Costa Rica...
Upon arrival in the capitol of San Jose, a scenic domestic flight brings you to the town of Puerto Jimenez. Greeted by your guide and fellow travelers, private transport takes you from Puerto Jimenez to your ecolodge in Carate. Located just a few miles from the entrance to Corcovado National Park, the lodge blends seamlessly into the natural landscape of lush tropical rainforest and pristine coastline. After settling in, take a tour of the grounds followed by dinner with the group. Fall asleep completely immersed in the sounds of the rainforest with anticipation for what tomorrow has in store.
Wake up early and get a head start on the day with a healthy breakfast followed by yoga with the group. Set out on a hike through virgin rainforest in search of enchanted waterfalls along the Rio Carate, a perfect opportunity to observe various species of flora and tropical birds along the way. After cooling off in the refreshing waters at the base of the falls, pack up and head back to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, take a kayak to a nearby lagoon and glide peacefully alongside blue heron, osprey, white face capuchin & spider monkeys, basil lizards, various fish, turtles, caymen and more as you explore this diverse and unique ecosystem. Return to the lodge in time for dinner followed by an exciting night hike on the trails surrounding the property. Your guide will point out nocturnal frogs, spiders, snakes, and other mammals in addition to sleeping birds revealing how the rainforest truly comes alive when the sun goes down.
Adventure awaits as you awake to another day in paradise. After breakfast, board a charter flight from Carate to the Sirena ranger station centrally located on the western shores of the peninsula. From Sirena, your naturalist guide will lead the group on an unforgettable journey into the heart of Corcovado National Park. Home to over 5000 species of plants, more than 300 species of birds, and over 100 species of mammals including deer, peccary, coatis, armadillos, anteaters, and sloths the trails from Sirena provide the best opportunities to see Costa Rican wildlife in all its natural wonder. Encounter all four species of Costa Rican monkeys including howler, white face capuchin, spider and the endangered squirrel monkey, rarely seen together outside of Osa. Those who are patient, reverent, and a little lucky may encounter the elusive Baird's tapir or one of Corcovado's resident big cats: jaguarundi, margay, ocelot, puma or even a jaguar! Your journey comes to an end back at Sirena station with a charter flight back to Carate where transportation will be waiting to take you back to the hotel in time for dinner.
Rise with the sun and join the group for yoga on the beach before another farm fresh breakfast. Return to the beach for a surf lesson lead by local instructors with time to hang out and enjoy the clear blue waters, sun, and sand before heading back for lunch. After lunch, pack your things, and board private transportation back to Puerto Jimenez. A boat will be waiting to take the group across the Golfo Dulce to your next destination.
Upon arrival at the lodge, unpack your things and take a tour of the unique property bordered by the clear calm waters of the Sweet Gulf. Spend the afternoon exploring the private trails around the lodge, take a kayak out on the water, or rest and relax in a hammock. After dinner, take some time to discuss the delicate balance between the fragile ecosystems of Osa and sustainable development, including responsible tourism and the role that we as visitors play in preserving such a magically unique destination.
After breakfast, head out with the resident chef for an edible landscape tour. Learn how to open a coconut, gather sugar cane and fruits before returning to the kitchen for a cooking lesson using ingredients gathered from your excursion. After enjoying your 'rainforest to table' lunch, tour an organic chocolate farm for a lesson on sustainable farming practices along with some delectable samples for dessert!
In the afternoon, set out in your kayak floating along the tranquil Rio Esquinas in search of the world's tallest red mangroves. Drift through narrow canals and channels formed by the intricate network of mangroves, home to small fish, shrimp, crabs, and iguanas. Back on the river, keep an eye out for the mighty kingfisher, blue heron, and white ibis in addition to turtles and the occasional cayman or crocodile. On you way back to the lodge, join up with a school of playful dolphins or dancing rays as you glide through the sunset painted waters of the gulf.
The morning is free to enjoy as you choose. Wake up early for birdwatching before breakfast, learn about medicinal plants or visit botanical gardens. Kayaks, snorkeling equipment, and hammocks are also available to use at your leisure. In the afternoon join the group for an afternoon of sailing, sun, and snorkeling in and around the Gulfo Dulce. Stop off at a coral reef to explore the gulf's marine biodiversity before lunch and swim on a secluded beach. On the way back, be on the lookout for turtles, tropical fish, as well as spotted, spinner, and bottlenose dolphins as you glide through the blue green waters. If you're lucky you may even spot a migrating humpback whale and her calf off the coast or the illusive and awe-inspiring whale shark hovering near the water's surface. Back at the lodge enjoy sunset yoga with the group before a farewell dinner and salsa before bed.
Wake up early for breakfast and final goodbyes before private transportation takes you back to Puerto Viejo for your flight to San Jose. From your airplane window, the seemingly endless blanket of lush green means so much more having unlocked the many treasures hidden under the rainforest canopy. Return home with memories the best cameras and story tellers couldn't do justice. Pura Vida.
